Hi, I would like to create a 3d real time strategy game. The game is set in a fantasy medieval world. There are four races, the humans, the orcs, the undead, and the demons. I wanted to know if there are any resources available to do this and how much they cost and what skills they require. Or should I start a company, take out a loan, and hire a programmer. What are the profits I can expect from a good rts game.

That's not enough to conclude how much time and money this will take. Think more about gameplay, platforms you are going to make your game for. But if you have a really good gameplay idea, don't reveal it here.

If you are going to create your game from scratch, any general purpose software development kit will go. Some development tools are available for free, namely Subversion (a version control system), MinGW (C++ compiler for Windows, a port of gcc), lots of development environments (Eclipse, QtCreator, Code::Blocks).

Generally games for Windows are written in MS Visual C++.

You'll need some raster graphics editor (Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Paint .NET) and probably 3D graphics editor (like Blender or Maya). Your programmer(s) will need good coding, geometry and algorithmic skills.

All general purpose development and graphics (3D graphics) tools have moderate prices (hundreds to thousands of dollars).

You may go an easier way and create your game as a so called "mod" for some commercial (of free) strategy game. (Just like Counter-Strike is a "mod" of Half-Life.) But in this case you may run into trouble, when you'll try to sell your game. Prices for licensing some of them for your games sometimes are colossal. (Price for licensing a game engine may exceed million of dollars.)
