So I just checked out a documentary called "Transcendent Man", starring Ray Kurzweil. I found it unbelievable at how he sees the future. Inserting chips into our skin to give us everlasting life, the ability to swim under water without the worry of oxygen, being able to spring a mile, and most importantly - the fact that computers will soon have a conscious. Those are only a few of things that he discusses. Many people however, disagree with what he's saying the future will be like, even though he has never failed to predict certain things. He's a truly remarkable man. What are you guys thoughts on his views on the future? I know the one man in the movie, I forget his name, thinks that there will be an "Artilect War" (Artilect - Artifical Intelligence) between the humans and machines. It's truly amazing. I just wanted to hear other peoples thoughts on these interesting future predictions.

Look at past predictions of the future, and you'll see how often they got it wrong. And not just a little bit, but often totally off the mark.

which is why I find it so interesting because this man has never made a wrong "big" prediction

Of those I'd agree with "the ability to swim under water without the worry of oxygen," and "that computers will soon have a conscious."

    "Conscious" is an adjective.
It is accurate to say that computers may soon possess "consciousness".

i suppose it would only be a small effort to provide a link so that people can see what you're talking about

hmm right.. but when I signed up it said before you can't post any links you must have posted at least 50 threads..? and I suppose it would only be a small effort to type in "netflix" on google.

You're suggesting that the world is going to become a Matrix. Inserting chips into our skin? AI is already happening, so I won't be surprised if there are computers with consciousness. Being able to spring a mile? I don't think that will happen. Interesting questions. Keep posting people, I want to see what you guys think as well.

but just think about how incredibly rapid our technology is evolving at!! Have you heard of Ray Kurzweil? He even suggests everlasting life which seems awfully far-fetched but quite interesting to think about.

AI isn't happening, at least not very soon. It'll take a breakthrough discovery to make anything close to human-level. (One of the professors at my college is an AI person, and keeps up on this stuff.)

I think I seen this documentary about a month ago on netflix as well haha.. Yea it was very interesting and I was pretty convinced that it is highly possible for his ideas to come true.. It really makes you think. He describes the process of evolution, how computers an very adv machinery will be incerted into our bodies at a certain age to extremely inhance our performances, until one day our body is purely made of machine and 0 dna.. It is interesting to think about...

it is very interesting to think about. Hmmm...I suppose technology is advancing at a very fast rate. I don't know! I will think about this if and when the day comes.

Well, the point of thinking about it before hand is so people will be ready when that day comes. And by ready, I don't mean in a bunker with plenty of guns and canned food like in the movies.

it will probably be about 23 years until we start seeing computer consciousness! As predicted by Ray Kurzweil. - The man has not had any failed predicions!! Very intelligent human being. When he was 13 he invented his OWN computer and designed things for the blind to see and the deaf to hear! Truly remarkable!

I know when you first hear about it the idea does sound craze but when you sit back and think about it what Ray says is going to happen is logical. Think about it this way: In the 1960's computers took up entire buildings.
In the 1970's computers took up rooms.
In the 1980's computers fit on our desks.
In the 1990's computers fit on our laps
By 2006 they fit in our pockets.
    Today we have google glasses.
In less then 5 years we will have contacts with computers.
Then by 2029 computers the size of blood cells will have more computing ability then all of NASA in the 1960's.

Think of paranoid survivalist loonies in the backwoods fighting off the black helicopters .... and every bad action movie/ book based on similar themes.

(We're not talking here about self-sufficient Mediterranean folk with brightly coloured jars of charred capsicums in oil and home smoked hams and sausages hanging in the cellar.)
