# Thread: question for you guys that know binary stuff

1. Assume a binary number x is of the form
x = x4x3x2x1x0

That is, x is represented by a binary string of length 5, where x0 ... x4 are the bits of this representation.
Let y be the number of the form
y = 1x = 1x4x3x2x1x0

That is, y is obtained from x by adding to its binary representation a 1 on the left.
i need to know the difference between y-x in decimal  2.

You have 5 binary digits. These represent a value of 0 or 2^0, 0 or 2^1, 0 or 2^2, 0 or 2^3, and 0 or 2^4, beginning with the rightmost digit. The next binary digit to the left will represent a value of 0 or 2^5. 2^5 = 32.  Bookmarks
