Hi. I am having some trouble with choosing a field in CS. I am currently a junior in UCSD as a CS major. I am not sure which field I should get into. For now, I am learning to webpage/server/networking, because it seems to be the most practical, which can help me find a good job easily after graduating. Since I really need to decide what technical elective courses to take, I would like to decide what field I will major in. Please give me some advice on various fields and how to make this decision. I want to get into a field that is practical and useful, so that finding a good job would be easy.
    Thank you very much.

Do you speak Chinese, Hindi, or Russian? If not I would avoid web apps...

I personally prefer very low level close to the hardware kinds of things, but was having trouble explaining why such things were needed 10 years ago when I left the US software development field. My, somewhat apocryphal, opinion is that employers want a quick fix for a current problem, so they look for specific prior experience and don't consider skills and abilities that might be a benefit over the long term.

Probably the best thing to do is look at the job recruiting sites and see what sorts of things are in most demand now, and maybe try to do some projections given types of jobs that are just now appearing in the ads.

Why does speaking those languages have anything to do with web apps? Because so far, gaming graphics and other fields don't seem like a good long term skill to me.

Most basic application work, including web apps, seem to be outsourced to countries where those languages are spoken. Although I heard recently the India is outsourcing to (I think it was) China... Also India and China are probably two of the fastest growing markets for such things.

My on the ground info is way old and I'm way realistic (cynical) so you should take this with a grain or two. I don't know but Gaming might be a growth field. It looks like most technology is driven by gamers, so you might get into nuclear modeling or something as a spinoff.

If you love programming, then I would recommend you to take web apps. Then if you love designing, I would say that go for Interface development. In addition, you can also try SEO classes.

Hey it's all depend on which field you like most and love to work. How much you have command in any of the field .Developing and Designing part is best in my opinion but in today's scenario if you want to work in networking field it's quite good.
