im a computer science major. I always do great in my classes and excel in programming (top 5 students every time). BUT i am totally lost when it comes to the basics. I got into computer science late, and i feel like everyone knows so much that i dont, such as building/fixing computers, and general knowledge not taught in class. programming is NOT my problem i completely understand and love what i learn in class, but feel so behind in other areas important to the field. I would love any tips on where to pick up this info, magazines or books to get etc. Im new to the geek world! haha

If it's hardware experience you want, look up any of the millions of "build your own computer" articles online. I just saw one about making a Linux box for under $200, which is not a bad price for the experience and you end up with something you can use (hopefully). Having a buddy that knows a bit more than you is always handy when problems arise....

Getting deeper into hardware/firmware, you could work with a micro-controller like the Microchip PICs or Arduino hobby board. Use either C or ASM to make it interact with the real world. Flashing LEDs is always a popular way to figure out exactly (or approximately) what is going on inside a computer.

At a middle level, learning as much about systems admin as you can is both useful in itself and gives insights into the internals of our new best friends.

I would suggest you to do training/internship in the relevant area's of your domain, in your holidays to explore things out and to gain knowledge.
