Thread: What to do with a server to make money ???

Ok I have a nice little server a dual proc HT Zeon with 4 shelfs of 100G HDD and 8G ram I am connectying to a comcast business 20D 5U connection.....

Intell I start lancenter what can I do to make a little cash on the side with the server that si legal and is away from website hosting ????


I am a first timer with server set up I will be running windows 2003 enterprise with a mysql data base and probley a few other havent decided yet on what to run besides the ms enterprise 2003 edition I do how ever have a w7 server thingy I can install but I want to stick with a somwhat familiar OS ....


any ideas are welcomed

You could sell it or let me run it and become my business partner. I have several ideas.

You can offer shell accounts.

This would mean you would have to uninstall Windows and install Linux, though. As scary as that might sound, it's not bad. :wink: Just take a bit of time to get used to Linux. It will be more stable and secure than a Windows server.

Then make sure that many popular programs such as ViM, Emacs, nano, nethack, gcc, g++, ghc, python, perl, irssi, and so on are installed.

Then you can set up accounts on the system which would let people remotely login via Secure Shell and do document work/browse websites/code on your computer, if for some reason they can't do so on their computer or it is more convenient to do so on a remote computer.

Just make sure to get legal stuff squared away and make it clear that you're not responsible for what people do on it, and provide an easy way for people to complain to you.
