Hi im doing my leaving in a few days (fun ) anyway im still not 100% on what i want to do next year, i have always had an interest in computers and computer science seemed like the logical choice for me but everyone that I have talked to about it had something negative to say. So im trying to see what the general feeling towards it is, so to anyone doing or has done comp sci my questions are:
is it a dificult degree? - id like to do something that is challenging and I havent heard great things (ie that cs is an easy degree etc)
is it a rewarding degree ? - do you enjoy it ?
are the jobs out there for cs grads as bad as everyone tells me, or as good as the uni's make out, or are they somewhere in between ? |

| Hi, I am a senior studying computer science (and have received A's in all my CS courses save one the last 3 years, and it was neither easy nor unmanageably challenging). People form these ridiculous opinions about specific majors, when all they have taken was a few intro classes. For instance, I practically slept through my first year of CS because it is programming centered at my school (and in most schools), and I just didn't find it challenging. On the other hand, I was very grateful because it gave me a chance to catch up in mathematics. By the second year when I was taking algorithms & data structures, assembly language programming, Theory of Programming Languages, Computer Architecture and Organization, theory of computation, etc I was really pushed to see the greater picture of computer science. This made me and ended up not only liking it, but loving it (as much as you can love school:) ). Also mathematics is great to couple with computer science. Like anything you take in school it does get easier as you keep on doing it. I used to wonder how people did seemingly crazy tasks such as compiler design and proof construction in advanced mathematics, but it just becomes natural after some time. In truth, even though much more analysis must be done in upper level mathematics, at least you don't spend all day memorizing random things you don't care about such as in a business class or similar majors (Although I think that all majors have a place in society and would not discredit any of them as an absolute waste of time. Some I feel were somewhat of a leap of faith however as far as job prospects). I think it is absolutely so ridiculous how some physics majors, mathematics majors, engineering majors, and computer science majors will scoff at how one or the other is "so easy". Just try to find your place and do well in whatever academic area you pursue. |
