Thread: Methyl Methacrylate

Hi, brothers and sisters. It has been a long time since I visited this forum for the last time. Big thanks for everyone who still remembers me and helped me ages ago.

So, I need help again. My frigging college won't pay for methyl methacrylate that has good quality. They have instead bought MMA that has less good quality, i.e. the MMA contains stabilizer. Have been told that I can get pure MMA through distillation, but I have to find the way myself.

Any help?

I presume Boiling point/pressure and temperature?

Yeah, the boiling point is 101°C. How does the fractional distillation work?

well say you have a mixture of two liquids called A and B.

A has a boiling point of 400K. B has a boiling point of 350K. A mixture of 100% A has a boiling point at 400k and a 100% mixture of B has a boiling point of 350K.

a 50-50 mixture of A and B will have a boiling point of approximately 375K. when you boil this mixture. the more volatile liquid will boil off first, so the vapour you collect will be richer in the more volatile component in this case B. this is condensed and collected, this product could now be 70% B and 30% A. you can repeat this mixture and obtain nearly 100% B.

doesn't always wor depending on the mixture, there is a nice graph that explains it better that words but i cant be asked to find it

Understand. What you've described is apparently the phase diagram. I'm currently learning it in my college. So, I suppose I have to understand that course firstly.

Is there another way to distillate my MMA?

Fractional distillation is easy. You just need to do a normal distillation except you use a fractional distillation head.

To purify MMA however, you can just do a regular distillation since the stabilizers aren't volatile.

It's apparently great. What must I do to do distillation? I've never done this before. A guide will be appreciated.
