I can imagine a sensor being really close to something and being able to sense minute changes in the location of a radioactively labeled atom. But I read somewhere that you can do this from very very far (outer space maybe?). So I'm wondering how you would do that.

A foton, if not obstructed, can travel any distance, at lightspeed. However the number of hits hitting the detector lowers significantly per distance.

    1) A huge detector, with detection piece as big as possible, maybe to unfold like a solar panel in space.
    2) Precise alignment, to know the exact direction of the foton.
    3) Maybe a directional filter, to only get readings from the direction you are aiming at.

Growing up, i marveled at star-trek's science, and ignored the perfect society. Now, i try to ignore their science, and marvel at the society.

Imagine, being able to create matter out of thin air, and not coming up with using drones for boarding hostile ships. Or using drones to defend your own ship. Heck, using drones to block energy attacks, counterattack or for surveillance. Unless, of course, they are nano-machines in your blood, which is a billion times more complex..
