Can any chemist comment on this calcium compound.

I am looking at installing a water softener in my 'hard' water supply. Instead of using salt, the one I am looking at uses a zinc ?anode which apparently converts the calcium carbonate in the water into 'Aragonite', which apparently doesn't coat pipes, showers and washing machines etc., and is safe to drink.

The sales literature is a bit unscientific and a bit over dramatic, so I wondered if anyone can comment on aragonite, especially in terms of human health?

    Thanks in advance.

Ah. I've just checked Wikipedia, and the zinc water softener idea seems to be pseudo-scientific nonsense.

Yes, Aragorn was, indeed, a knight.

Aragonite is a form of calciumcarbonate. It is just a different crystal structure, aragonite is a slightly more unstable form. However it is biologically equal to normal calciumcarbonate, which is 100% harmless. If you want to soften your water before putting it in your water supply. Look for a sodium salt, which has a nonmetal group which doesn't dissolve with Calcium, like sodium oxalate.. However, this is a hazardous and even toxic chemical and should be avoided if the water is supposed to be consumed..

Another trick is by using a sodium ionexchange column. Which binds stronger to 2+ ions, and breaks off the weaker 1+ sodium ions. This needs to be regenerated once in a while with a sodiumchloride solution (high concentration).
Growing up, i marveled at star-trek's science, and ignored the perfect society. Now, i try to ignore their science, and marvel at the society.

Imagine, being able to create matter out of thin air, and not coming up with using drones for boarding hostile ships. Or using drones to defend your own ship. Heck, using drones to block energy attacks, counterattack or for surveillance. Unless, of course, they are nano-machines in your blood, which is a billion times more complex..
