In middle school everyone is taught that there is 3-4 states of matter, being solid, (plasma), liquid, and gas.

I don't think that everything can neatly fall into one of these categories. Fire is energy, yes, but it is a real thing that is not a solid, plasma, liquid, or gas.

Light would also apply to this argument.

I suppose what everyone will say is that "light is not made of matter, and neither is fire."

They are not, but on a deeper level they are. They are real things that can be experienced. The question is this. Is it only energy that does not fit into one of the states of matter, or is there something else. Forget about what we cannot see, although that would certianly apply, but since we are talking about matter let us focus on the seen world. What can these things teach us about the way of nature?

Yeah come to think of it wasnt THAT called the 4th state of matter too! They probably don't mention that in middle school!

Fire is matter releasing energy/photons of light/heat, the matter is still a solid/liquid or gas (depending on the fuel). Just because it doesnt look like it doesnt mean it's not.

Is light not an electromagnetic wave. So is light not a gas or some what else.

There is more states of matter, but given your examples - fire is 2 gases undergoing a chemical reaction and releasing light and heat, and light isn't actually matter at all, it's radiation.

Okay, lets say there are 4 states of matter for arguments sake: Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma.

There are, however "transitional phases" something just doent "jump" from being a solid to being a liquid. It is thermal energy which increases gradually. The whole state of matter thing can be seen as being a "spectrum" if you like, of possible states of matter. for instance, a chunk of metal for instance at 20 degrees C is going to be more plyable than it would be at -20 degrees C. Now lets take slyme; if something is "slimey" is it a liquid or a solid. In truth its something inbetween but for arguments sake most would say it is a viscous liquid.

    Fire, is plasma !

As I have mentioned in a previous thread; when an exothermic reaction occurs the energy thermal energy given off heats the air around it suffieciently for the air to become a plasma.
The hand of time rested on the half-hour mark, and all along that old front line of the English there came a whistling and a crying. The men of the first wave climbed up the parapets, in tumult, darkness, and the presence of death, and having done with all pleasant things, advanced across No Man's Land to begin the Battle of the Somme. - Poet John Masefield.

nope, fire is a gas that is undergoing chemical reaction releasing light and heat.

put it in a microwave and you got plasme thou

Make sure you have a sturdy pair of glasses and breathing apparatus when you 'look into' some of those....
