    Why CaO is a more effective drying agent than MgO?

    Because Ca is more electropositive than Mg (being further down the periodic table in the same group), CaO is more ionic than MgO. This means that the O in CaO is more like O2 and therefore reacts better with water to form OH:

    There are no paradoxes in relativity, just people's misunderstandings of it.
