I'm interested in buying an exciting metal and Mercury is a little bit on the dangerous side for me. I know Gallium seems like fun with it's low melting point in and all, but chemically, is it very interesting? will it react with HCl or NaOH? Can I easily make salts with it? Would love to find out if it's worth buying

    Thanks
    Joshua

well it melts if you hold it and it dissolves in aqueous alkali . if you find that kind of stuff fun, then go for it.

Go for it. It seems fairly non-toxic and expands on freezing, as ice does, which is fun. So don't put it in a metal or glass container in case it melts and then splits the container when it re-freezes.

I didn't realise that there are materials, other than water, that expand on freezing.
It appears that there are actually a handful of materials that expand when frozen, including silicon and germanium.
    Thanks for correcting my mistake.
