    how did we first get the idea to use an explosive (nitroglycerin) on humans for certain medical conditions? What made the first person to try it think the patient wouldn't blow up?

    It works because in the body it quickly breaks down into nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels. I would guess that they knew about nitric oxide's effects before they started giving nitroglycerin to people, then once they discovered that it's easily converted to nitric oxide they decided to try that.
