    It's 2 Na(s) + 2 H2O(l) ----> 2 Na+(aq) + 2 OH-(aq) + H2(g)

    NaOH is a strong base so it will split into the ions Na+ and OH- which become surrounded by water molecules hence the (aq). You can write NaOH but writing it as ions just shows it's basic nature.
