Thread: What is difference between excluded volume 'b' and actual volume 'Vm' of a real gas. ?

My chemistry textbook mentions in topic of 'Volume correction for real gases' that excluded volume is 4 times of actual volume i.e. b=4Vm where b is excluded volume is the volume of a gas in highly compressed state but not in liquid stateI understand the concept of excluded volume but what is actual volume. Please help?

actual volume will be the volume which gas molecules will have if they could be compressed further with no empty spaces left behind between gas molecules
