Hey guys, just wondering what the term "population" means when used in spectroscopy, like for example in the phrase "the populations of the initial levels" of a sample undergoing rotational spectro. Just trying to figure this one paragraph out...

    Cheers,

    Pierre.

Alright, thanks. So the population of an initial level is how many species (whatever we're talking about, atoms in a molecule or electrons in an atom) are in that excitation state. Makes sense.
