Hei :) I have a question I hope someone can answere. I am a Norwegian student. I am soon done with the first year on IB. In our syllabus we are going to write an extended essay, appr. 4000 words. I am writing the extended essay in chemistry and have released that it is difficult to find a suitable topic. The problem presented has to be something that is not to known. Ex: c-vitamin in fruits. I want to find a more original topic I can relate to for example environmental issues in Norway. Do you have any suggestion?

The impact of acid rain from coal burning power stations in the UK on Norwegian forests in the 1970s (?) would be a possibility. Here are a couple of references that might get you started.

Thank you! That's actually a really interesting topic. :-D But do you think it is possible to do experiments on the lab related to this topic?

This is outside my area of expertise. I suppose you could generate quantities of sulphor dioxide and carbon dioxide, dissolve specific volumes of them in distilled water and see what pH resulted.

I don't know how much time/budget you have to work on this, but a more elaborate version of that would be to rig up a chamber contain air contaminated with specific mixes of the gases (in ratios matching that released by coal fired power stations) and 'drizzle' a spray through this. Recycle the water x number of times to simulate the passage of the rain through a large vertical volume of atmosphere and again measure the resultant pH. Repeat the experiment at different temperatures to determine if there is any correlation there.

Just some ideas, as I say this is well outside my expertise.

What did you do for the rest of your life?

Effective spam should be transparent, not in your face obvious. You still have a lot to learn.
