Thread: is there any home analysation of chemicals?

Im looking for a way i can tell which type and how much of an alcohol is used in a product i have, is there any home tests i can use to tell this? for example if this reacts with this then it is ...this?
Or, is there anyone or any company that i can send a sample of a liquid to for analysis ?

If its a commercial product the contents must be on the label. also the MSDS lists the ingredients.

they used to use gunpowder to test:

"To ensure that the rum had not been watered down, it was “proved” by dousing gunpowder in it, then tested to see if the gunpowder would ignite. If it did not, then the rum contained too much water and was considered to be “under proof”. It was found that gunpowder would not burn in rum that contained less than 57.15% abv. Therefore, rum that contained this percentage of alcohol was defined to have "100 degrees proof"."

I am not saying go blow things up with gunpowder, simply that this techniqued used to be used.

you could also measure it with things like flame speed and stuff but that might involve equipment which the home user doesn't have access to........

go have a rum and coke and trhink it over, product not specified,
GC/Mass spec ie no home test for you
