Hi i no that nitric acid can be obtained by oxidizing ammonia, but i cant find practical, non industrial methods for doing this, any help would be much appreciated.

oxygen+ammonia+tank+ignition?
so is it just as simple as lighting the ammonia? i thought it was more complicated than that, and would simple household ammonia be acceptable for use?
hmmmm nitrates make good explosives. Do you want nitric acid or are you only interested in the chemistry? The reason I ask this is that HNO3 can be had easily. covertly or above board.
Its as near as your local home depo in various forms...[/color][/b]

naaa i just have a general interest in chemistry, tried the whole explosives, thing, kinda got bored, explosions dont have a huge amount of everyday use, and once uve seen one you've seen them all
I see, chemistry isn't one of my strong points. Too much common sense involved,(heh)
However I like pyrotechnics and am planning an art project using some rather large explosives. Ironically its art fight against the proliferation of cluster munitions and land mines which kill and maim thousands of innocents.
Good luck with your chemistry, we need more chemists!
ps the explosive devices will be applied long before the public would veiw the finished art piece..in case you (or the FBI was wondering....)

ok how can you get nitric acid easily otc?
Yes, one of the best sources is auto detailing shops, they sell 70% HNO3 for cleaning aluminum parts before anodizing them.
Beware having had a serious accident while mixing acids, I would advise extreme caution and full protective gear as well as ventilators and static electricity discharge straps to all equipment as well as an eye wash station and full first aid station.
Really. I had access to all of the above but still nearly lost an eye. Beware! Nitroglycerine is soooo unstable ....Heh.. even when made into nitrocells ummm ahh..."guncotton"... or derivatives thereof...
So please, if you like this kinda' thing well be carefull !
and dont do it at home bi in a underground bunker so if things go wrong the only mess to clean up will be whats left of the body.
have fun...

Was just curious as to whether useable HNO3 could be acquired from PH Down
http://www.growell.co.uk/g/98/Nitric-Acid-pH-Down
Apparently its 38%, but i was wondering what else is/is likely to be in it, and whether it would be possible to remove any significant impurities.
While, if it is possible, cheating to get HNO3 would be less fun than making it from scratch, it would be interesting to know if this is a viable 'cheat'
many thanks

HNO3 is very easily made. especially if your into the chemistry of things. do you have even the simplest chemistry set? thats all you need. some H2SO4 and KNO3 equal parts by volume and some heat. Its actually a very fun distillation and very pure. but again as REV ROSWELL said careful that stuff is a very strong acid and will burn you very badly; wear gloves.
