    Hi every one ! ...

I have a question which might seem so simple but i need a precise explanation for it .

Why when the value of the vapor pressure of a liquid equals the atmospheric pressure it boils ??

and what is the pressure indicated in the phase diagrams of matter ? is it the total applied pressure / atmospheric pressure or the vapor pressure ?

    thanks alot ♥

It is the pressure of the system/the atmospheric pressure.

And I think the explanation is that at that point you cannot add any more energy to the system without it undergoing a phase transition. The particles in the liquid have reached the point where they have more energy than can be overcome by attractive forces in the liquid.
