in general when the gas arrange in a regular fashion it form the liquid and when the liquid's molecule arranged in a lattice fashion it form solid! In this process generally the molecular distance is decreasing but WHY in the case of water to ice the case is different? means it is expend!!

a simple bit of research on google could have answered your question. and in the future i suggest that you do this first before asking a question. it's certainly not a stupid question, of that i believe there are no examples. however it is not something that is difficult for you to find on your own. in the future if you have already researched something and still need it explained, feel free to consult the SF, we're happy to help... well at least most of us.

    physics: accurate, objective, boring
chemistry: accurate if physics is accurate, slightly subjective, you can blow stuff up
biology: accurate if chemistry is accurate, somewhat subjective, fascinating
religion: accurate if people are always right, highly subjective, bewildering
