Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm just wondering about something for a school project.

Question 1: Are there any theories that talk about the chemical bonds between particles and their strengths?

Question 2: Why is water a good solvent?

    Thanks.

    1. Yes there are several.

    2. Off the top of my head, its abundant, non-toxic, polar, relatively low BP, realitively unreactive and more I'm sure.

Solubility is linked to whether the solvent is polar/nonpolar. The general rule is that like dissolves like, so Water being polar will dissolve other polar molecules. Oil will not dissolve in water as it is non polar. I think it might dissolve in ethanol as ethanol is non polar, but Im not sure about that one so don't quote me.
