    In short, the energy stored in a certain kind of bond is always the same, so you can work out algebraically the change in overall bond enthalpy in a reaction, without needing accurate bond enthalpies or experimental data.

    Usually, this means taking the formation enthalpy of the reactants from the formation enthalpy of the products, or some variation on this.
