    Hello,

I would suggest that you go to your professor and ask him/her for more information or additional help. Are you in a high school or university chemistry class? Do you have a teaching assistant?

It really isn't possible to give you information relating to a specific lab exercise without more information pertaining to the experiment and even then it would be difficult as I do not have access to your lab and cannot really see what materials etc you have to work with...

I'm sure that your professor would be willing to work with you if you explain to him that you are having a problem with the lab. If you have a theoretical question then I might be able to help you but I'll need more details.. but I suspect your professor will be helpful if you ask during office hours or after class...

    good luck... : )

actually we have enough materials for the experiment....
    cooking basin
    caustic soda
    KCL
    fresh seaweed
    beakers
    test tubes
    thermometers
    single phase mini grinding machine
    oven

    thats the material i remember...
how can i possibly break the gel from the seaweed and meet the expectation of my teacher??? its my only way to pass...
i have tried cooking it using caustic soda and KCL by steaming them... yet my gel is still low..
can you help me with this??? at least just send me the formula... here is my eadd

    Hello...
I understand your problem.. but I really do not feel comfortable giving you experimental advice over the internet. Ironically I just spent 2 days in the hospital cardiac unit visiting someone I care very much about after I found him passed out in his lab from accidental ether exposure on Thursday night... He almost died...

I will however tell you enough to help you if you combine this advice with the information provided in your lab manual for the course....
The concentration of the caustic soda should be kept at the minimum listed in your lab manual. The yield / quality of the gel will be based on the concentration of algae.. make sure you check the quality of your algae as well. Is it very brittle and dry?

Also see this link for more information: http://resources.metapress.com/pdf-p...1&size=largest

you will need access to SciFinder or your University's online journal access. Or if your library carries this journal you can read the full article by going there and asking the librarian to help you find the hard copy.

Either way whatever alterations you eventually decide to make to the standard procedure should be run by your professor before attempting.

    Good luck. : )
    hope this helps...
