    why is RHODIUM preferred over COBALT in the catalytic synthesis of aldehydes...?

    I believe it's because cobalt tends to bind things too tightly. Usually metal catalysts work by binding something, making a reaction happen, and then releasing the product (and then it goes on to bind more reactant and start over) With cobalt you tend to get the product stuck on the metal, not wanting to come off.
