I've devised a experiment for a nickel catalyst in a fuel cell (PEM).

First I make hydrogen through electrolysis and collect it in a test tube.

Now this test tube is special because I've rigged it like a mini fuel cell. To stop the hydrogen from coming out of the test tube, I made this little assembly that ressembles the MEA in PEM fuel cells. It's a nickel plate with a plastic sheet under it and a wire connecting the catalyst exposed to the hydrogen to the plastic exposed to the air.

Theoretically, the hydrogen should get split by the nickel into its protons and electrons. The protons go through the plastic, but since the electrons can't they take the wire to make it to the other side and react with the oxygen in the air. So I should feel moisture on the outside of the plastic, right? Or around it, at least.

I haven't done this yet but maybe I'll do it tomorrow or in the week.

sounds coo :? l. will it work?

ya doing this by your self, or as a group.. or in collage? or perhaps in your shed?

how much electricity do you think you'll get out of it?

question- when ya have it done, will the electricity used to get the hydrogen in the electrolysis, be les than the output? :P

.. which raises another question in my mind, is there a plausable way to get H2 that would be used as energy, for the exp. like that?

Edit for a question..... protrons and electrons, aient that ike splitting the atom if you will? like splitting a alpha particle? and if that is the casE? could there be radiation? if its a possiblity how ever slim , i would advise (in my unprefesional oppinion) a gigier counter thing?

    Thanks anyways.

I'll try it again with different catalysts and different methods and see what happens. I think it needs to be better prepared and more accurate. Well we'll see.

I made a platinum catalyzed alcohol fuel cell a while ago...I just electroplated some platinum onto Ni/Cr wire to act as the terminal/catalytic surface. You could power it with methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol. It seemed to really like isopropanol, although I have no idea why. It was fun to play with, but you couldn't actually power much with it.
