recently a lot of companies have taken over the idea of corporate responabibliy, giving something back to nature and society (or just improving their brandnames?). some companies give their employees a week paid vacation to let them help save in the tsunami-struck area's, others, for example BP, started advertising for sustainable fuels.

So what do you think, is it a good thing that companies are becoming socially responsable or should they concentrate on what they do best, making money? Or is it even problematic, because important welfare tasks seem to be privatised (so only the most spectacular problems get solved)?

In the end there are people behind the money, these people have to live on the planet also (for now). So to answer your qestion I think it's a good thing. We all need to realize that we have to live with our neighbors. For those that can't handle that concept, either move to a private island or just off yourself

Corporations are still raping the people left and right, so it's nice at least a handful are doing something that appears almost positive. Now if the governments would just start to do the same.

Corporations need to contribute to the society because they sustain and are sustained by the society.

Economic theories do tend to conceptualize in dichotomies.

What is it about economics that gets otherwise sane people to talk like that? Let's try again.

Economic theorizes tend to define problems in terms of simple opposing forces [well, that's better]; labor v. management, supply v. demand. Economist need to study more biology; the economy provides good and services to people, who work to supply good and services to other people and to make enough money to buy good and services from other people.

    "It's a web, stupid."

And if they get good press, that's fine. I believe in the power of enlightened self-interest.

Corporate Repsonsibilty is dead or dying. I mean look at what happened with all the CEOs and bigwigs of those.......not a whole lot. TYCO, though, is an exception and those people should be punished for doing what they did.
