    Hi ,
For quite a while, now, Iīm trying to find a topic for my master thesis. unfortunately, it turns out to be far from easy.
Iīm studying social science specializing in doing business in a development / developing country context.
First i wanted to write about industry clusters. i found some interesting work on bollywood and so i digged a little deeper. I found out that bollywood is organized in social networks of many small companies as opposed to big corporations in hollywood or business groups in many latin american countries. The more I read about business groups and social networks the less i was interested to necessarily
relate it to the film industry. A second fact not really helping me is that there s truckloads of articles about hollywood and bollywood but virtually anything about other countriesī movie industries at least when it comes to analyzing the industry structure.
Just recently I found an interesting article on clusters in combination with entrepreneurship, which broadens the field again instead of narrowing it down.
.. I kind of donīt really know what Iīm doing no more since most of my search resulted from spontaneous ideas which faded away as quickly as they pop-up in my head..

Iīm grateful for any comments.. thanks people.

So you wanted to write about social structures existing between the businesses that form an industry, you chose the film industry, and you wanted to try and use a foreign country's film industry as your focus?

I don't think most foreign countries have very well developed film industries. The USA pretty much dominates that market.

Are there any other industries that would work?

Sort of. I couldnīt just write about Hollywood even if I wanted to, unless Iīld do it
in relation to some developing country film industry.

There are other industries like renewable energies, especially wind and water. I havenīt heard of regional clusters in that area though.. is there? And also, how do I narrow it down from knowing that there is one (or not) to having a research topic?

    greetings

Guess you have to look for an industry that doesn't benefit from economy of scale. Maybe an industry built around a hobby? R/C car shops are to be found in a lot of towns across the USA, for one. (Don't know if that qualifies)

For a foreign country, you'd have to know what kinds of hobbies people have, and buy stuff for to do that. Maybe ski makers in Europe?

    Anyway, I'm just guessing blindly.

car shops donīt really qualify, though.. the idea to build the thesis around a topic is pretty exciting nevertheless..
if I used tourism I think it might work.. thanks for the input :-)
