If we, as a world begin, a true space age i.e. by making mars and the moon 'hot spots' then we could, in effect, drastically alter the face of economy. This has the potential to create an almost undepletable source of income for the world.

    JOBS GALORE.......... YAYAYYYYYYYYYYYYA

ECONOMY CHANGING FOREVER..... FOR THE BETTER.... FOR OUR FUTURE

    FOR SPACE..... = )

The cost of going up or down will always be much greater than the cost of surface travel. So, if your market is, say, Tokyo, it will be less economical to grow orbital sunroom tomatoes than nuclear hydroponic tomatoes in Antarctica, even underground. It is cheaper to pull ore out of the ocean floor than carry it from the moon. Etc.

A few rare products that depend on weightlessness could be profitably made in orbit if we get the currently obscene freight costs down. But this will always be a tiny fraction of the world's economy, like the diamond mines in Canada's far north.

I think there are certain asteroids worth mining for precious metals, like platinum.

On the other hand living almost self-sustainably in space might one day be very hopeful and productive. Agricultural area per person could be enormous, basic necessities like water and electricity could be cheap. Though again we have this problem of moving stuff up and down: All those schoolkids need crayons launched up into orbit, and so forth, 'cause even a colony the size on New York can't manufacture many different things as Earth does. A moon colony would bankrupt on toilet paper orders alone.

My prediction regarding genuine space pioneers: they will survive pitifully by Earth standards. But unlike the stabilized Earth population they will gradually expand... exponentially...
