    ok suppose i want to take a short DNA strand like this one 5-gatcctgcta-3 into RNA, and want it to be labeled. So radioactive GTP is used. And supposed if the GTP is radioactived with the additon of 4th phosphate group in the alpha postion, will the resulting RNA be radiolabeled? What about the beta position?

    I don't get this at all

    The alpha, beta and gamma positions refer to how close the phosphate is to the sugar. Look up the structure of a nucleotide triphosphate and you should see what I mean.

    The fourth position bit doesn't make sense to me, that isn't how radiolabeling is usually done. But the general thrust of the question is to get you to think about which positions in your oligonucleotide have alpha phosphates still attached, which have beta, and which have gamma. It's a typical question to ask because if you understand the process of nucleic acid polymerization then the answer is easy ---

    So start with a structure of a NTP and see if you can work it out from there? otherwise let us know how far you get.
