    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me regarding a microbiology assignment. I am confused and need some guidance as to what to do next. Details of the assignment below:

    Q) Describe, how food poisoning bacteria are able to survive and proliferate in foods.

Taking in to account the following factors:

•The influential factors within foods which influence the growth and survival of microorganisms.

    • Relate these factors to the growth of specific food borne bacterial pathogens

•Use information from journals (at least five references published within four years) to Effectively explain the relationship of environmental factors and the growth of specific Food borne bacterial pathogens.

Now I have been asked to reference my work using journals, so far I have identified 4 journals:

    1) Letters in applied microbiology (2003)
    2) Journal of applied microbiology (2005)
    3) Applied and environmental microbiology (2006)
    4) Microbiology (2007)

So far I have identified the influential factors which influence the growth and survival of microorganisms.

Any help will be appreciated on this topic, or if anyone is familiar with the journals I have mentioned. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

A few clarification questions - is this a research paper, or at least a shortened version of one? Also, is this your first assignment of this kind? Because you seem to be misunderstanding the requirement about journal references. What the assignment is asking for is five articles printed in a scientific journal that describe an example/examples of the way environmental factors effect the growth of food borne pathogens, not five different microbiology journals. (Also, I assume that "within four years" means within the last four years, so as to be more up to date.)

What exactly are you asking for help on? it seems to me that you've researched your first bullet point, so now you need to research your second bullet point. doesn't seem too complicated.

Well this is a 1000 word limit assignment, so its a short assignment. Im not having problems with the explaning the factors of food poisoning bacteria, im having difficulty in referencing my work cant seem to find the right articles.

Basically there are no references to back up my points in the assignment. It says in the assignment i have to 'cite at least five references from journals using the harvard referencing system' theres no mention of whether i have obtain information from book journals or online articles.

Can you recommend any online journal articles?

Ok. I'm guessing this is your first assignment of this kind. It's not necessary that every single point you have be backed up by a journal article. You just need to include references from at least five articles. So for the rest of your general information, you can cite your text book or class lectures, or wherever else you're getting your info from.

Also, to my knowledge there are very few articles that are published solely online. What you're looking for is articles that were published in printed journals, and were then made available for download online. These days, that's pretty much everything. A lot of journals are even archiving their older volumes and making them available online as well. The only problem is that you may have to pay to access some articles. For the most part, your university should have online subscriptions that will allow you, through them, to access most any article you'll need for free.

The art of searching for references is one that takes a little time to learn, so to get you started I'd suggest these two websites:

PLoS ONE is a library of articles available online; PubMed is a search engine for articles, and if the article is available online, the search results will link to the site it can be downloaded from.
