How many have sent their DNA to one of those ancestry search businesses? Well I did and got my results yesterday. I was surprised to see it was basically what I thought with a couple small surprises.. For what it’s worth…..

49% Northern Europe and Russia, including Ukraine and Romania… no surprise since my one set of grandparents from a part of Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, between Romania and Hungary. That pretty much my mother’s contribution.

24% England….. been told that an ancestor from Britain fought in War of 1812-14 , survived and was given land for his services.

14% Scotland…. Same as above? I think I have more DNA from my one grandfather tied to Britain

9% Sweden & Denmark….now that was a surprise. I always thought my one grandmother had German roots although search indicated a slight chance she did.

3% Ireland…another surprise since I always consider myself more Irish than that. My father was a red headed freckled fellow but I suppose that could be a Scottish trait.

1% Jewish People’s of Europe….. I guess that’s a possibility with my European connection. Shudder to think of what the Third Reich would have done with this type of info.

As far as closely related, a great deal of my recent ancestral past deals with Ontario, Quebec and northern USA states. I figured that would be the case. Regardless I have many, many cousins, close and distant…too many to have them all printed and from all over, including Britain, Europe and Scandinavia.

All in all it’s interesting. They had one of my two sisters DNA on file, so that was a match. I see some close cousins also. Seems legit. Give it a go if you haven’t already. Anyone else care to share experience? Do you think these businesses are fairly accurate?

With a 'by' ending my surname appears to be Danish or Anglo-Saxon.
I imagine my ancestors crossing the sea and setting up homes in eastern England.
That might account for 50% of my DNA.
But where did they come from? Assume Africa, but there might have been an Asian diaspora.

My surname has an English and Irish spelling. I was told it’s the Irish version by my dad at one time but not too sure now. I was pretty much floored knowing Scandinavia lurks in my closet…lol. Also shows that my mom & dad each contributed ~50% towards my DNA. Northern Europe & Jewish People’s add up to 50%. Not sure exactly what Jewish People of Europe actually refers to so I’ll look it up someday. Have a couple of Jewish neighbors so they’ll probably have a good laugh when I tell them.
