Positive ions, animals ability to perceive earthquakes

Hello!
I came on this forum to ask a question, I hope this is the right section for it.
I read on the internet that some animals can perceive earthquakes before humans, by using their hearing or smelling or by perceiving the vibrations with their paws, but I've also seen that some animals can "perceive" positive ions in the air released by the movements of the rocks to sense that an earthquake will occur in the future.
My question is, what is the sense they use to perceive this ions? Do they use smelling? Does the long distance allow them to perceive those ions with smelling anyway? Or does it happens only with smaller distances?
I read in particular this happened with a study involving mice in Peru.

Do you have any links to the positive ions claims? It's not one ive encountered before and it seems extremely dubious as the movement would have to occure BEFORE any ions were released

It seems to be plausible that animals may detect the onset of P waves, which typically arrive a few seconds before the stronger S waves that humans perceive.

However the only reliable references I can find to ionisation relate to somebody called Helmut Tributsch, who wrote a paper in Nature suggesting it in 1978: https://www.nature.com/articles/2766...e-ef455cec1efd

It does not seem as if this has got any further since then.

So it looks to me as if this idea remains a speculation that is not yet supported by any reliable evidence.

That makes sense. This guy Tributsch was motivated by the 1976 Friuli earthquake, apparently. :grin:
