Thread: quick question+ unsure!

The most common eye disease in individuals with IDDM is “diabetic retinopathy.” This disease is characterized by changes in the blood vessels of the retina. In some people, the blood vessels may swell and leak fluid, and in other people, abnormal blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina


Why may diabetic retinopathy result in some vision loss or blindness like how is this possible can someone expalin it to me through the structure of the eye? thanks!

Basically blood vessels are damaged in diabetics who badly manage their blood sugar levels as sugar can cause endothelial damage. There are other contributing factors though eg blood pressure.

If blood supply is damaged/interrupted then that tissue wont work! Hence loss of sight/bluured vision etc. However there are varying degrees and stages of retinopathy
