I have a couple questions about this stuff. First, what is its chemical composition? Second, what exactly happens in the reaction where it is made?

Our teacher said that it was a by-product of the reaction between oxygen and sugar. But what are the specifics, the details, the chemical reaction?

Well i don't think it's a by-product. It is stored in mitrochondria then converted into ADP and then AMP. Finally I think it is used as energy source.

ATP = Adenosine triphosphate (adenosine with 3 phosphate groups attached.

It is produced in the krebs cycle in the electron transport chain from NADPH/NADH formed in the Krebs cycle. If you REALLY want to know all the details find it on wikipedia but its pretty complicated to explain in words only.

OK, thanks. I guess I'll look it up on Wikipedia.
