Why do neurons communicate primarily through synapses rather than through gap junctions?

Synapses are the gaps. Some different kinds of chemical messengers go through there. It does it real fast. Nerves have analogies in electrical wires ,but that is wrong. An electrochemical potential difference is transmitted along the nerve and through the synapses.
