    Can someone please tell me what determines species density? Does a biom head toward greater species complexity, simplification, or stasis?

    Inter or intraspecies density?

    Biological systems tend towards whatever the environmental influences push them towards.

    I second that.
    That's said, speaking of ants, there is a regulation. When there is too many ants in a colony, a sub group of ants, is leaving the colony to form a new one.
    At least, you have several colonies of the same ants species. At the difference of other kind of ants, they did not interfere each others
