I have a question regarding evolution.

Is this "graphic" correct regarding basic evolution mechanisms (as an easy way to understand it, not the exact "formula" per se):

    A - Natural Selection
    B - Mutation
    C - Gene Flow
    D - Genetic Drift

So, if there are any mistakes can someone enlightenment me? Or is this graphic completely... er.. stupid, and evolution is not like that at all? Bear in mind that i'm not a biologist, so go easy on me.

I like the shuffling to the Germinal. I envision reproducers lined up at the gate, checking in their baggage and presenting their breeding tickets.

What do you mean by "shuffling" and how does it by-pass mutations?

I found it very confusing. In addition to RedPanda's questions I fail to see how the No-Random evolution change is accurately placed. Nor do I understand what is meant by Plus or minus reproduction. The diagram just does not describe evolution as I understand it. Perhaps my understanding is faulty, but the diagram does nothing to correct that.

So can you describe evolution as you understand it?

We begin with a population of interbreeding members some of whose genes have more than one variant (allele). These are expressed as a variety of phenotypes. The proportion of alleles varies through chance, genetic drift, sexual selection and natural selection. Periodically new alleles and new genes are generated by mutations. Natural selection eliminates some of these, while the others become part of the cycle of variation via chance, genetic drift ,etc.

If a subsection of the population becomes isolated in any way divergence of genotype and phenotype will proceed. If connection is not reestablished speciation will occur. Over longer time periods higher order changes my arise through these same mechanisms.

    I cannot. I am not a biologist.

I removed the graphic because it was a bad idea. Sorry.

I had thought that since you had drawn the graphic, then you would know what the labels meant.

A good resource for learning a lot of detail on evolution might be www.talkorigins.com

A bad idea... well, we all get those on a daily basis. Good ideas are harder to come up with.
