    Hi everyone !

    I wonder if there is a difference between these terms or if they are synonyms ?

    Assuming “homogamy” to be synonymous with “inbreeding”, I found this:

    Although assortative mating mimics to some extent inbreeding, there are major differences. First, inbreeding (in the system of mating sense) is based on choosing mates by pedigree relationship; hence, all loci are affected by inbreeding. In contrast, assortative mating affects the genotype frequencies only at those loci that contribute to the phenotype that affects mating and other loci that are in linkage disequilibrium with them. Recall, inbreeding in U.S. whites increases the incidence of all genetic diseases. In contrast, children from marriages between deaf people have no increased risk for genetic diseases other than deafness.
