My feeling is that we'll advance along the gene therapy for genetic diseases path long before we could do the selection thing successfully.
We can do a bit, a very little bit, of this when rejecting some blastocysts/embryos during IVF processes. But that's only for parents using IVF. Much better to identify the maximum number of children showing signs of certain genetic diseases and trying to eliminate that disease in that family group. If we get really good at this, we could treat some conditions in much the same way as we treat vaccine-preventable diseases. The difference being that it's an individually targeted process to be effective rather than the population level needed for vaccines to cut down the incidence of whatever the problem is.
