If the gel has only ran for one hour then stopped but you wanted it to run overnight, can you continue running it? why or why not?

It means that you came in the next morning and realized your mistake. I don't see any significant evaporation or diffusion that would happen during the entire run compared to the anticipated run. Without knowing any other facts, I would guess that continuing to run it for the remaining time would be valid as long as you can determine the remaining time and you make a note of it in your records.

Yes thats what happened, such a stupid mistake cost me the last of my protein! Someone else told me that the protein has diffused too far into the gel and I won't get any relevant results...well see. Thanks anyway.

Why don't you try isoelectric focussing? This means your protein does not diffuse , but the separation is no longer by size alone, but charge. And as sds size is charge. Hmm i don't really know what would happen in that case. Not sure if pH has effect on the charge of sds. Though you could try .
Growing up, i marveled at star-trek's science, and ignored the perfect society. Now, i try to ignore their science, and marvel at the society.

Imagine, being able to create matter out of thin air, and not coming up with using drones for boarding hostile ships. Or using drones to defend your own ship. Heck, using drones to block energy attacks, counterattack or for surveillance. Unless, of course, they are nano-machines in your blood, which is a billion times more complex..

Yes you can continue running it, so long as you run at a relatively low voltage and ensure that your protein doesn't run off the end if the gel. Beware of potential health and safety hazards - especially fire hazards. Also make sure that the buffer is topped up, otherwise the gel might not run straight - which you will be able to tell by the shape of the dye front. Best wishes, Tri
