There are all sorts of theories, BUT the best one I have come across is my own  And that is consider the brain is a huge set of supercomputers all coupled to each other running a program under Windows. Now end the program, and let the computer idle - i.e asleep now watch the HDD light, see it flashing away? - It's dreaming cos I have not asked it to do anything! - Not as absurd as you might think. I believe there are parallels in that our brain which has many feedback paths is running with no real input. Think of 'howl' in an Amp.

Maybe that's all bollocks but since nobody knows, my idea is as valid as most. At least it comes from an engineer who well understands feedback and control systems and, since we model computers on our own characteristics - maybe we are closer than we really know.

(I do accept the scenario above ie windows idle etc is absurd)

Another point here, there HAS to be a random generator in us humans which spurts out possibilities at all times for all scenarios, ie I am sitting here typing but I suddenly do any number of different things I could kiss the Keyboard, throttle the mouse, See two completely random thoughts, now let that generator loose when you are asleep, chuck random signals into your idling system and bingo you have dreams.

I've heard the brain dreams to make itself prepared for any situation. Like it simulate in itself bieng hunted by a tiger and then it can try what ever it want since it won't get hurt.

I've also heard it's caused by the re-arangement of data in the brain

This is a nice link. Though it doesn’t explain why we dream it tells allot about dreaming. [

I am pretty sure they are a way to access things that we consciously have no access to. Although, without practice it is sort of more like a bunch of semi-random seeming situations and ideas. I do not have much training in this but I am currently trying so later I may remember to post here what happened.

If I understand right there are three to four states of consciousness. Awake, asleep, dreams, and I think transcendental meditation was declared a fourth state but I am not sure. Anyways, What I am getting at is that it is definitely different from just plane sleep.
Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only realize the truth. There is no spoon. Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself. -Spoon Boy
