Hello, my little brother is talking about alpha brain waves and that they will get you smarter.
Apperently mozart contains this type of waves.
This waves will get you smarter because if you listen to them they will make you think in alpha patterns.

Le me rational:First of all, a brain wave does not existits its a way of messuring the "fireing off" the neurons, am I not right?
How can a neuron activtiy pattern be messured in such an exact, wave function?

Then if mozart make you smart wouldnt rap make you dum?

    Prethanks

OK. Your brother has obviously read some of the guff that's been written about a very limited experiment.

The experiment was with college students (surprise!). It basically showed that their performance on an intellectual task was improved for a few minutes after exposure to Mozart's music - can't remember what the control was.

It did not show that there was any lasting improvement. It did not show anything about people other than college age students. It didn't show anything about child development or cognitive science generally. And it certainly didn't show anything about babies.

Music for students generally? I found when operating a tuition business that things went better when there was music quietly in the background. No vocals of any sort - words and human voices are distracting. I used Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, piano works by Beethoven and Chopin. I also included quiet jazz - think Dave Brubeck - so long as the piece didn't include any of those peculiar vocalisations that some jazz musicians tend to break out with when they get over-excited.

Really, the best thing for studying is music that's not quite white noise. Regular rhythm is the main thing. Subdued volume so that you don't start nodding your head or tapping your feet. But substantial enough to dampen any external noise and to soothe any personal tendencies to self-distraction. All you want out of music for study is better concentration for a longer time.

There are no shortcuts. (Which is what this argument is really about.) Study should be hard work. Creating a better environment allows you to work a bit harder, a bit more successfully, for a bit longer. That's all you can ask for. And it should be all you need if you're already applying yourself.

Hey, I like rap. And I do try not to be rude, uncouth and generally gross.

Well, individual neurons may fire as almost one-off events but the overall function of the brain does operate in a coordinated manner and there are rhythmic/oscillating components to this. These are not "exact" wave functions but they do play an important role in overall brain function (and, presumably, creating the sense/illusion of consciousness).

More detail here: Neural oscillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And a summary of the different types of waves here: Electroencephalography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I can imagine that activities such as meditation that can increase alpha waves could improve the ability to concentrate and improve learning. Not quite the same as making you smarter, but valuable anyway.

p.s. is your little brother's spelling better than yours, as well?
