    Are we now self-creating?

Is today's technology that good, so good in fact, that it can be regarded as our way of designing our own species, our own selves, beyond what would have otherwise been natural evolutionary determinants beyond our control?

    Any ideas?

Assuming that technology was driving Homo sapien phenotype/behaviour, it would still not be independent of evolution. Technology is the result of human enterprise, and so it would be more fitting to think of it as an Extended Phenotype (Dawkins).

No, not over... but selection is very different.

In the US things are not going well lol...Seems like only the stupid are having kids and they do so in great number... To be fair there are still a lot of intelligent doing so but not in the same rabbit style and not without giving thought to how they are going to provide for the children. So I see in the next 40-50 years stupid people having 3-4 kids for every child that will be raised well. Exponentially increasing the rate of stupid to smart...

My time in the East allowed me to see that in the world at least some populations value the stuff of the future.

So you both agree we are then still at the mercy of an unknowable environment with an equally unknowable future, otherwise the environment we create we do so that suits our development?

Don't forget that populations will continue to evolve regardless of any environmental factors. Selection is just one of several ways in which evolution takes place; others include mutation, neutral evolution (drift), recombination, and gene flow. The only way to stop all this is to either not reproduce, become non-biological or grow ourselves from a suite of master genomes kept on file.

Is that what you mean be evolution?

But yeah I do agree with that...even if the some aspects of the environment are being created, it inst grand design it is path of least resistance..

No, I think all this covers the topic brilliantly. I was merely concerned about the difference between natural evolution, and intelligent design. I think we've covered that. Thank you all.
