I've heard chimps and humans have about 96% to 98% similar DNA, depending on how you're comparing them. But what about between a chimp and say a monkey (new or old world) or a lemur? Just as a point of comparison.

    says the following :

Interesting, but I was looking more for chimp-(other primate) similarities

maybe i'm having this wrong, but since humans and chimps had the same ancestor between 5 and 10 million years ago, would the divergence between chimp and lemur not be the same as between human and lemur ? likewise for baboon and chimp

this is assuming that the divergence between human and chimp involved a similar degree of change after the split in either branch

That's sort of why I want to know, since knowing both says a lot more about evolution than just say "humans are very similar to chimps", but I'm sure there would be a little difference in the difference , since either chimps or us may have changed more than the other since the last common ancestor with, say lemurs.

The quote provides the basis for what you are asking, there is a 1-2% difference between Pogo and Homo, thus the differences between the other primates and chimps are going to be within the 1-2% range from that of Humans and other primates.

But I'd rather know this experimentally, rather than taking it from what one would expect given common ancestry.
