Thread: Shannon-Weaver diversity index help

I need to calculate shannon-weaver diversity index for a group of insects, but they were only identified down to family (not to genus or species). Can the shannon-weaver index still be applied? I've seen other presentations/posters indicate shannon-weaver calculations but their identifications only seemed to be down to family. Does it have to be only calculated with specific species?
