1. In my studies i am comming across a unit of measurement which looks like a u but has a longer straight line, its some form of tiny measurement of length.
Since its not on the standard keyboard and i dont know what its called I cant google it, can anyone help - a lower case u with a longer straight bar extending downwards

3. This µ is the Greek lowercase "m" having the name 'mu' (say "myew"). You can think of it as an "m" (or, better yet, an "M"), where the middle is saggy and rounded instead of angular, and with a longer/descending left "leg".

The small mu represents various scientific concepts. It represents "micro-" (meaning one-millionth), as in µm, meaning "one-millionth of a meter" (also called a "micron"); it represents the coefficient of friction between two solids; it commonly represents the arithmetic mean (ie, the "average") of a population (which is also where the Greek lowercase sigma, σ, represents the population's standard deviation); etc.

4. When it comes to measurements it means 10^-6; a micrometer is 10^-6 meters (as opposed to a millimeter which is 10^-3 meters, or a nanometer which is 10^-9 meters).

In situations where we can't use the mu symbol, it's acceptable to use a lower case u.

6. I need to spend more time to read more fully, and then I would have understood what you were actually asking. My apologies for my last post.

In an effort to add something more constructive, this page shows a large number of special characters, including mu, and how to produce them. Make sure num lock is turned on, press and hold down "Alt", and then type 230 or 0181 before releasing. Different characters require different numbers (which are listed).
-Perhaps it is because I am running linux, but this is not working for me. I remember that a few years back I used this (when I had windows). I don't know much about computers so I can only speculate as to why this isn't working for me at the moment; I hope it works for you.

7. thank you all very informative
