What triggers a cat to go into or out of heat? I understand the basics. I am looking for detailed explanations involving physiological reactions and brain chemistry. Anyone know this or know where I could find this information?

Only female cats go in to estrus, or heat. Male cats are ever ready for mating as soon as they are adults. Females are most likely to go in to estrus in the spring or summer because the longer daylight hours lead the pineal glands in cats' brains to release melatonin, which stimulates their reproductive organs. Estrus can also be initiated by thunderstorms as the electrically charged air causes neurological and hormonal changes in felines.
