Hi I'm new and I don't know whether it's good place to ask

    but

I want to be a scientist and I hesitate whether study Molecular Biology or Biotechnology?

Is it a big difference between these two faculties?

What benefits, skills, what kind of knowledge gives Molecular Biology and what about Biotechnology? :?

    Dear Nehelenia,
I must confess, I have never really grasped what Biotechnology is, exactly. I get the impression that it is using knowledge about the living world in order to improve things - processes, techniques, products, etc.

Molecular Biology is, clearly, the study of life at the molecular level.

The two subjects can perhaps be best separated on the basis of the questions they ask. For example, very broadly, Molecular Biology seeks to address the question of how life works at the molecular level.

Biotechnology, presumably, asks something a bit different - how can we manipulate information about the living world, in order to produce better things?

I am also tempted to suggest that Molecular Biology is a more basic science, whose focus is the advancement of knowledge for knowledge's sake; whereas Biotechnology is more applied and driven more by a desire for commercial and material gain. But this may be going too far.

As to which you should pursue, i guess that really depends on your preferences - career aspirations; which you would enjoy more; which you feel most suited to.

Either way, Welcome to Science 8)

    Thanks

I think that I want to be useful and I will select biotechnology.

Knowledge is beautiful, but hey, I can learn by myself.
